The more I read about Satyam episode the more I feel like admiring the 'foresight' of Ramalinga Raju. Here is why:
- He siphons out 7000 Cr and then admits to a lesser crime of fudging of books instead of getting caught while stealing Crores from the Company.
- He turns himself in to the police and gets arrested at time and place of choice. Now SEBI and other sundry agencies will have to seek courts permission even to question him and he being the accused will have full protection of the Law until proved guilty which is never going to happen.
- By subjecting himself to Indian Judicial system, he has saved himself from Class action suits in the US where such frauds can get you jail terms for anywhere between 20 to 50 years like Enron.
- In India he will get a maximum penalty of seven years if convicted at all and in meantime he will be out on bail looking after his other business interests.
It's a pity we have to put such a 'visionary' behind bars.
