I may be excused for posting a reply before The Enlightened One did.

The article has conveniently ignored the fact that improved technology brought prices of electronic goods down,whereas the farm sector enjoyed technological progress in bits & pieces-the impact of the green revolution is very limited in extent.On top of it,fragmented holdings pre-empt the usage of superior technologies in tilling (like utilizing a tractor). Well -intentioned schemes like co-operative farming turned out to be dismal failures.Agricultural credit is still predominantly in the informal sector(usurious money lenders). All these push up production costs and reduce productivity as output does not increase commensurately with inceased cost of production. The lacunae in PDS have not even been mentioned while an examination of the same would have identified its impact on price rise. In fact it is good to note that disguised unemployment in agriculture is getting reduced through migration.A lot of reform needs to be put in place in agricultural sector along the verticals before it becomes competitive. So,I feel that the article only made a superficial attempt at comparing an industry largely in the formal sector with agriculture which is in the informal sector and which has several other limitations like suitabitlity of soil,etc.

It is not the salaries of government employees that cause these problems--it is the leakages of the system and total lack of accountability which are a burden on the tax payer.
